'Price paid for Colonialism - early deaths of women and children - Lothian Cemetery, Delhi' - by K J S Chatrath

The oldest British cemetery in Delhi is the Lothian Cemetery which was established in 1808.  It was in use for more than a century before it was closed to burials during the 1960s.

Buried in the cemetery are those who belonged to the local Christian community between 1808 and 1867. Throughout the cemetery are graves of members of the East India Company and their families who perished during India’s first cholera outbreak during the 19th-century.

Also buried in the cemetery are English servicemen who died during India' First War of Independence in 1857. The rebellion was primarily aimed at the rule of the East India Company.

One is sorry to note the deaths of children and young ladies in large numbers. May the departed souls rest in eternal peace.

When I visited it on 4th November 2007, parts of it appeared to be under threat of  getting enchroached upon.
